A self taught potter. It all started when I watched The Great Pottery Throw Down TV series, the passion of all the contestants and judges inspired me to learn this ancient craft. I was lucky enough to be able to setup a pottery wheel and kiln in my shed and so my ceramics journey began.
I attended my local college to get some insight and found Simon Leach and Earth Nation Ceramics on YouTube. One day I would love to be on that show that sparked everything.
Now moved out of the shed I have my own studio, helping others to enjoy the wonderful world of ceramics by providing access to clay and equipment.
I mainly use stoneware clay's but have tried terracotta and porcelain. I like to challenge and test myself by attempting different shapes, styles and techniques such as marbling clay, expanded pattern forms and sodium silicate crackle. I also enjoy making Raku pieces, which is a very intense and exciting process. Always learning and always practicing, always finding new decorating techniques and shapes to throw.
The process of making functional and beautiful ceramics from such a basic material. This is why I enjoy this age old process, your always learning and striving to perfect your skill. When your sitting at the potters wheel you have such a different thought process compared to our everyday busy lives. Its a process you cant really rush, it takes time, and a little thought which helps your mindfulness, and creative freedom.
This tactile process allows the physical form to start to take shape. Then when the fettling is finished you place it in the hands of the kiln gods, and your never really sure how it will turn out. This whole process is so engaging, allowing you to express your artistic side it focuses your thoughts, it changes at each stage, the way you have to prepare and manipulate it, such a wonderful material.
"As you center the clay the clay also center's you"
After watching the Great Pottery Throw Down. I was hooked, i had to have a go at this pottery wheel stuff. That's when I discovered Simon Leach (legend). Through watching Simon's vast video archive he has inspired me to practice and push myself, gave me inspiration, guidance and knowledge to progress my skills and to strive to be as good as he is one day.
My other great inspiration in ceramics has been a young man called Donta and his YouTube channel, informative and funny. He is very skilled and has been a great help to me. Many Thanks D
